Sarah Serrato, LPC

My name is Sarah and I am a bi-lingual (Spanish) therapist. My mission is to treat each person with the deepest respect and acceptance of who they are and where they are in life’s journey. I guide my clients on their path to healing, growth, and becoming their authentic selves.

My Education and Experience

I received my Bachelor’s in Applied Behavioral Science from National-Louis University in Evanston, IL. I completed my Masters in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University, Chicago and became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in 2010. I spent my internship working with underserved clients age 5-80+ during my internship at Healthcare Alternative Systems in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. This experience provided me with a wider perspective on how economic conditions impact the wellbeing of individuals. I’ve spent the last ten years at Samaritan Counseling Center working with underserved populations of Chicago’s northwest suburbs.

How I Help My Clients

I believe in meeting my clients where they are. If you are dealing with PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Mood Disorders, Sexual Abuse, Domestic Abuse, career changes, facing adversity, major life transitions, relationship issues, or just struggling with everyday stresses, we will focus on working as a team towards your goals. I take a wholistic approach to helping my clients and use my specialties to enhance progress. I enjoy working with adults, couples, adolescents, and LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

In addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), other therapy modalities I use include:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps my clients overcome past or current traumatic experiences.

  • Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) helps my clients learn how words influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and how this can be used to one’s advantage toward our wellness.

  • Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) to help my clients increase focus and attention, lower anxiety, increase their ability to soothe themselves, improve learning, sleeping, and reduce pain, among other health benefits.  ‘

  • Hypnosis and Mindfulness to guide my clients to deeper levels of relaxation where the subconscious may be accessed to allow for major traumatic memories to be identified, transformed, and healed.

My Specialties and Passions

Immigration Issues: I help immigrant families with culture shock and adaptation. I have helped clients work through multicultural and relational issues that so often arise from such a huge life event. Having firsthand experience on the challenges faced by immigrants and their families, helping others in immigrant communities is extremely important to me.

Premarital Counseling: I have a specialty in premarital counseling, where I help couples become aware of what it takes and means to be a partner in life—in all aspects of life, where each partner expresses their values, goals, and expectations in their relationship before they make one of life’s greatest commitments.

More About Me Personally

I grew up in beautiful, central Mexico. I now live in Barrington, IL with my family. I enjoy walks on sunny days and love biking, kickboxing, swimming, hiking, dancing, meditating, and Yoga. I am passionate about spending time with my family, reading, road trips, watching the rain while resting by the fireplace, and listening to birds’ chirping first thing in the morning while enjoying a cup of hot mocha.
